Rail Brake for Elevators
A rail brake applies braking force directly to an elevator guide rail. It is separate from the elevator machine brake assembly. The suitability of a rail-mounted device depends on the equipment, required protection function, governing code, and the acceptance process for the project.

How the rail-mounted mechanism is evaluated

Unintended Car Movement and Ascending Car Overspeed are separate code functions. Confirm which requirement applies to the specific elevator.
Mount at the guide rail
The device is installed at the guide rail and applies braking force directly to that rail, outside the machine brake assembly.
Test and document the work
A complete project includes the approved configuration, installation checks, required functional testing, inspection, and AHJ acceptance.
Physical rail mounting is typically completed within six hours inside a permitted project. Permitting, controller coordination, testing, inspection, and acceptance determine the total schedule.
Rail-mounted and machine-brake retrofit scopes
Both approaches require a project-specific review. Their installation scope differs because one works at the guide rail and the other changes the existing machine brake assembly.
